Luis Ibanez was recently awarded a People's Choice Award by our readers for his contributions to the site. It's no wonder he has so much to say and impart on open source projects—he works on them fulltime!

In this Community Spotlight, Luis sheds light on what projects he contributes to, why he believes it is important we all give back at some point, and what open source tools he can't live without.

Plus, learn where developers are desperately needed and can make a huge difference in society.

The EFF covers Google's open patent non-assertion pledge

patents for open innovation

The flood of software patents has created an environment where companies are afraid that innovation leads to being hit by patent lawsuits. Every dollar spent fighting patent trolls and or waging patent wars is a dollar not spent researching, developing, and creating jobs. The situation is so bad that, in 2011, Apple and Google spent more on patent litigation and buying patents than they did on research. So it's no surprise that some companies are looking for new ways to navigate the patent system while promoting openness and innovation.

You’re invited to help us celebrate an unlikely pairing in open source

Posted: 16 Apr 2013 01:00 PM PDT

We are just days away from reaching a significant milestone for our team and the open source and open standards communities: the first anniversary of Microsoft Open Technologies, Inc. (MS Open Tech) -- a wholly owned subsidiary of Microsoft.

We can't think of anyone better to celebrate with than YOU, the members of the open source and open standards community and technology industry who have helped us along on our adventure over the past year.

We'd like to extend an open (pun intended!) invitation to celebrate with us on April 25, and share your burning questions on the future of the subsidiary, open source at-large and how MS Open Tech can better connect with the developer community to present even more choice and freedom.

I'll be proud to share the stage with our amazing MS Open Tech leadership team: Jean Paoli, President; Kamaljit Bath, Engineering team leader; and Paul Cotton, Standards team leader and Co-Chair of the W3C HTML Working Group.

We will share personal anecdotes about how an unlikely pairing -- Microsoft and open source / open standards – may go down in history as successful as Chocolate & Peanut Butter, Cats & the Internet, and Pirates & Ninjas.

Come raise a toast to how far we have come as a community, and to the exciting places we'll be headed in the next 12 months.

Find your ticket below, and register here http://congratsmsopentech.eventbrite.com.

Cheers,

Update on Tablet App Guidelines and Screenshots

Posted: 16 Apr 2013 12:51 PM PDT

Posted by Ellie Powers, Google Play team

More and more, developers are investing in a full tablet experience for their apps and seeing those investments pay off big. Starting today, it's even easier to show off those tablet apps to users and to understand what it takes to make a great tablet app.

Many of you have already made optimizations to your apps to make them more beautiful and useful on tablets, and we're giving you a way to showcase your application's specialized tablet layouts. You're now able to upload screenshots of your app running on 7" and 10" tablets to the Google Play Developer Console, and those screenshots are shown preferentially in Google Play to users on those devices.

In October, we published the tablet app quality checklist, which shares best practices for creating tablet applications that users will love. We've updated this checklist with additional tips and guidelines, as well as more details on specific technical checks you should perform to ensure your app is correctly optimized for tablets. Soon, we'll start surfacing tips based on our tablet app quality guidelines directly in the Google Play Developer Console, and we'll use these guidelines to help users better discover tablet apps in Google Play.

So upload your tablet screenshots and confirm your app follows the quality guidelines today.
