Does the Apple-Samsung case have a silver lining? For the open source community, the large damages verdict is disturbing, but at least it is drawing public attention to some of the deep problems of our patent system. This week the New York Times ran a front page story on the jury's verdict that said, "The case underscores how dysfunctional the patent system has become."

Beer brings people together: Obama, homebrewers, and online communities

In my favorite open source quote, Richard Stallman explains that "Free software is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand that concept, you should think of 'free' as in 'free speech,' not as in 'free beer'."

However in the past week, I've begun to question the validity of this explanation. In fact, I would argue that free software is exactly like free beer.
